An Is, Is Mary by Denny Lancaster

An Is, Is Mary by Denny Lancaster

For some an "is not" is really an "is"
and by determination logic will define,
of all the "is not's" a course to pursue,
because all it takes is guts and time.

Ah, but by computations, people say,
reduced many years to reckoning? Nay,
for 'twas only striking from the calendar,
and stuck to it tomorrow and yesterday.

Mary is an "is" with determination absolute,
did not with "is not's" jarring logic confute
and with guts determined if more than trice,
life's leaden metal into gold transmute.

Upon her nursing honor, thanked her Lord,
smiled at the misbelieving black horde
thrust aside fears that infest the soul
and scattered them with his whirlwind sword.

Now dear reader be as Mary who would dare,
cut loose the shackles of "is not's" knotted snare
and seek a blessing from HE who does not die
for our dear soul knows an "is not" is a vile lie.

Strange, is it not: of the gentle folk "is" who
before us passed the door of honor through,
but returns to tell us of HIS glory lined road,
which we all may discover and travel too.

In the end from Mary have in poem we learned,
that the domain is "is not's" lives hope burned
but from all who try and become "is" sleep
and tell their comrades, and to honor returned.

Footnote: Iris, keeper of the rainbow by Josephine Wall was chosen to honor Mary Schmidt and her recent nursing honor, because throughout the ages, the rainbow has been the symbol of better things to come.  May Mary, like Iris continue to travel swiftly so that mere mortals can see them both in their passage across the heavens.

Footnote:  We asked Mary to tell us about herself and her award, in the hope that others may be encouraged by her efforts.

First of all, I have been a registered nurse for many years. I originally obtained my ADN from Barton County Community College. I went back to school in 1998 carrying 6 credit hours each semester even during the summers. This was while I continued to work full-time at Salina Regional Medical Center as a vascular access nurse for hard IV starts, the insertion of peripherally inserted central lines, and the like. There are 5 of us on the team.

I went back for personal satisfaction. I really wanted a bachelor's degree for my own satisfaction and there is no monetary gain by having a bachelor's degree. School, work, and family kept me busy

Just a little extra here: (1) By graduating in December of 2002 I was in the 100th graduating class at Fort Hays State University. (2) I was also in the 50th  nursing class and the nurse who started the program was Leora B. Stroup, the one who's name is on my award.  (3) My ancestors helped to build FHSU (the limestone buildings and all).

The award is given to three people: one chosen person from the "on campus" students, one from the "outreach RN's" of which I was, and one from the masters program nurses.

First of all, you have to be nominated for the award by maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or above. A form must be filled out for the award listing community and work type of involvements and such. Then 2 letters of recommendation must be included...one from someone the nominee has worked with and one from a faculty member. Then the faculty votes.

I am sending attachments to you: 1) the Stroup Award Information sheet, and both letters of recommendation so you have more insight. I am also sending you 2 jpeg files showing my sister and I doing a skit on dental care for the kindergartners. The presentation was much fun and given to 4 different groups.

The award says "Chosen by the nursing faculty for outstanding clinical performance, community involvement, and academic achievement." It's signed by the president of university Dr. Hammond, the nursing department chair, Dr. Hassett, and my advisor, Dr. Liane Connelly.

I am just so proud of this award and to have accomplished the obtainment of this degree. It is something I never thought possible at my age.

It is hard to go back to school and I did it twice....FHSU wants me to start the MSN program next fall.....I don't know?"  Mary aka ~Dream Fairy~ aka Mary Schmidt, BSN, RN
